Educating the Educators. Part 1

The American educational system is in need of help, which our industry can provide. Schools have three populations that present opportunities for the wellness/health industry:
1. Staff
2. Students
3. Parents

Children in grades K to 12, and even college-age students, are in serious need of assistance with lifestyle modification. Their parents need assistance also, but, even more, they need education about the effects their children’s sedentary lifestyle will have on their health.

As our industry awakens to the realization that not everything that drives success relates directly to annual membership sales, the door opens to limitless possibilities. These possibilities offer extraordinary success, while truly serving our communities and changing the very health of our nation. It all begins with education.

Reaching educators
The media is releasing volumes of information about the poor health of both adults and children in America. The following three websites offer information and research findings that quantify the need for a strong outreach program targeting the educational community from top to bottom:

The educational community needs a “wakeup call” about the health of our children. Many educators view our industry in a less-than-flattering way, based on “bait and switch” tactics practiced by some club operators. Swaying educators’ opinions will require personal contact and education. Information gleaned from the previously listed websites can help.

The educational community needs persuasive information about the importance of effective exercise and nutrition, and the assistance that professional wellness/health facilities can offer them. Schools as an institution have failed to provide the level of exercise and nutrition that our youth need. And educators need help in carrying out this important mission.
